The day starts early, with a stop in Taroudant to walk along its red ramparts — a smaller, quieter echo of Marrakech's medina, without the crowds. From there the route continues to Taliouine, the heart of Morocco's saffron-growing region, with a stop at a local cooperative to see how the spice is harvested and sorted by hand.
The road then climbs toward Ait Ben Haddou, the largest and best known of the region's fortified kasbahs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose red earth walls have featured in a long list of films and television series. The day ends in Ouarzazate — nicknamed the "Hollywood of Africa" for its film studios — with dinner and the night in a riad or hotel.

The road follows the "route of a thousand kasbahs" through Kalaat M'Gouna, at the centre of the Valley of Roses, before reaching the Dades Valley and the town of Tinghir, where old Berber villages cling to the hillsides above the gorge. A walk beneath the Todra Gorge's 300-metre red cliffs — a favourite spot for rock climbers — is well worth the stop.
After a break in Erfoud and Rissani, the route continues to Merzouga, where camels are waiting for the ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes. An hour along the ridgelines brings you to a traditional Berber camp, with woven carpets, Bedouin-style tents, and a clear view of the stars once night falls.

After returning to Merzouga for a hot shower and breakfast, the drive heads to Rissani, once the seat of the Alaouite dynasty that still rules Morocco today, with its veiled women and hooded men giving the town a distinctly traditional feel.
The long return route runs via Alnif, Tazarine, Nkob and Agdz, tracing the Draa Valley and its hundreds of Berber kasbahs, before continuing through Taznakht and Taliouine and arriving back in Agadir after sunset.
