Travelling From Agadir

Why Agadir works as a starting point for the Sahara

Agadir sits on the Atlantic coast south of Marrakech, which puts it on a different approach to the Sahara than tours starting further north — the road runs through the Anti-Atlas rather than the High Atlas, via Taroudant and the Tizi Machou pass, before joining the more familiar route through Ouarzazate. For travellers already spending beach time in Agadir, or flying into Agadir–Al Massira Airport directly, it means the desert is reachable without first routing through Marrakech.

A different first day than the Marrakech route

Where tours from Marrakech head straight over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the Agadir route starts with Taroudant — often nicknamed "grandmother of Marrakech" for its own walled medina and quieter pace — before climbing into the Anti-Atlas. Ouarzazate joins the route from there, and from that point on the journey mirrors the routes described on our Marrakech tours page: the Dades and Todra valleys, Ait Ben Haddou, and the dunes of Merzouga.

Choosing between a quick trip and a full circuit

A 3 or 4-day tour from Agadir is built around the desert itself — enough time to reach Merzouga, ride into the dunes, and return without much spare time along the way. Give it a week or more and the route can properly take in Ait Ben Haddou, a loop through Marrakech, and the imperial cities beyond, closer to the depth of our full Morocco Grand Tours. Since our Agadir itineraries currently cover 3 to 9 days, most travellers with more time available end up extending through Marrakech rather than starting a second trip from there.

Personalizing the route

The desert stages of this route suit most travellers, but the details worth adjusting are usually about pace and companions. Families often prefer the shorter driving days built into our family tours, while couples travelling for an anniversary sometimes upgrade to the private camps used on our honeymoon itineraries instead of the standard desert camp. Either way, the same private driver-guide and vehicle stay with you from Agadir to the dunes and back.
