4 Days Desert Tour from Agadir to Merzouga

Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Agadir in the morning, and the road east soon reaches Taroudant, a walled city sometimes called "grandmother of Marrakech" for the six kilometres of ochre ramparts that still fully enclose its old town. There's time to walk a stretch of the walls or the nearby souks before continuing toward the foothills of the Anti-Atlas.

The route then climbs to Taliouine, known across Morocco as the country's saffron capital. A stop at a local cooperative or small museum explains how the crop is grown, harvested by hand each October and November, and sorted thread by thread — one of the more unusual detours on any Moroccan road trip.

From there the road continues to Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar of red earth towers dating back centuries, and one of the most recognisable UNESCO World Heritage sites in the country. A guided walk through its narrow lanes and a climb to the hilltop viewpoint above are well worth the time before the short final stretch into Ouarzazate. Known locally as the gateway to the desert and internationally for its film studios, Ouarzazate has its own Kasbah of Taourirt worth a visit if there's time before dinner and the night in a riad.

The morning heads first to Skoura, a palm oasis dotted with some of southern Morocco's finest kasbahs — Kasbah Amridil, among the best preserved, is a good stop for understanding the traditional mud-brick building techniques still used across the region. From there, the road continues along the so-called "route of a thousand kasbahs" to Kalaat M'Gouna, the centre of Morocco's Valley of Roses and host to an annual rose festival each May.

The Dades Gorge follows, its walls streaked pink and red as the road climbs past old Berber villages built directly into the cliffs, before a stop at the Todra Gorge — a dramatic limestone canyon with 300-metre walls that draw rock climbers from around the world. A short walk beneath the cliffs, with the river running alongside, is one of the more memorable stops of the whole trip.

By late afternoon, the landscape opens out again on the approach to Merzouga. Camels are waiting at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes for the ride in, timed for sunset, when the sand shifts through deep gold and red before the light fades. Dinner, music around the fire, and a night in a traditional Berber tent close out the day.

Those willing to rise early are rewarded with sunrise over the dunes — a quieter, softer version of the previous evening's colours, and worth the effort even after a short night. After a camel ride or 4x4 transfer back to Merzouga, a hot shower and breakfast set you up for the day's long but scenic drive.

Rissani, once the seat of the Alaouite dynasty that still rules Morocco today, offers a lively local souk and a genuinely traditional atmosphere worth a stop before the road turns west into the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest, threading through Alnif, Tazzarine and Nqob, with countless Berber kasbahs and palm groves lining the route. The overnight stop in Agdz, on the banks of the Draa River, breaks the return journey roughly in half and offers a proper look at valley life rather than a rushed drive-through.

The final stretch crosses back over the Anti-Atlas via Taznakht, known for its handwoven Berber carpets, before a return pass through Taliouine — a second look at the saffron region from a different angle than day one. The road then follows the Souss River valley, lined with argan trees, back toward Agadir, arriving by late afternoon or early evening.
