Fes to Marrakech, Without Skipping Anything
This 8-day tour is built for travelers who want real time in both Fes and Marrakech, not just a drive-through. It opens with a full guided day inside the Fes medina, crosses the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley to two nights around the dunes of Merzouga, then works south through the Todra and Dades Gorges and the kasbah route to a full guided day in Marrakech.
Compared to shorter Fes-to-Marrakech routes, the extra days go toward depth rather than distance: a dedicated Fes city day with a local guide, two nights around the Sahara instead of one, and a full free-flowing day exploring Marrakech's palaces, gardens and souks before the tour ends.
Airport pickup in Fes and drop-off in Marrakech, a private driver, and daily breakfast are included throughout.
Why 8 Days, and Why Travel One-Way?
Why 8 days: shorter Fes-to-Marrakech routes (3-5 days) focus on an efficient Sahara crossing with limited city time. This route spends the extra days on depth — a full guided Fes day, a second Merzouga night, and a full guided Marrakech day — rather than adding more driving.
Why one-way: traveling Fes to Marrakech in one direction avoids backtracking to Fes. The route moves naturally south — imperial city, mountains, oasis, Sahara, gorges, kasbahs, High Atlas, imperial city — so every day of driving covers new ground.

How Does the 8-Day Itinerary Unfold?
From the medina of Fes to the dunes of Merzouga and the palaces of Marrakech — eight days across Morocco at a proper pace.
Arrival at Fes Airport
On arrival at Fes Airport, a driver meets you and transfers you directly to your hotel or riad in the city, with the rest of the day free to rest and settle in ahead of tomorrow's full day of sightseeing.
- Airport pickup and transfer, Fes
- Free time to settle in
- Overnight: hotel/riad, Fes
Full-Day Guided Tour of the Fes Medina
After breakfast, a local guide leads a full day through Fes el Bali, widely considered Morocco's most historic imperial city and the largest car-free urban area in the world. The tour begins at the Golden Gate of the Royal Palace before continuing through the old Mellah, the city's historic Jewish quarter — one meaningful layer of Fes's multicultural history.
From there, the route winds deeper into the medina's oldest alleyways to the Chouara Tanneries, the largest traditional leather tanneries in Morocco, and on to the exterior of the Al-Qarawiyyin complex — founded over a thousand years ago and recognized as one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world. Entry to the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque itself is generally reserved for worshippers.
After lunch, the tour continues to the restored Nejjarine Fountain and its museum of wooden arts and crafts. The late afternoon is left free to explore the souks independently. Overnight stay in a medina hotel.
- Golden Gate of the Royal Palace and the Mellah
- Chouara Tanneries and Al-Qarawiyyin exterior
- Nejjarine Fountain and museum
- Overnight: medina hotel, Fes
Fes to Merzouga via the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley
Leaving Fes after breakfast, the route climbs into the Middle Atlas Mountains toward Ifrane, often nicknamed Morocco's Switzerland for its alpine architecture and cool climate, and on through a large cedar forest, where wild Barbary macaques may be seen close to the road.
Midelt, known locally as the Apple City for its orchards, is the stop for lunch, before the drive continues south along the Ziz Valley, where a long belt of palm oases opens out beneath panoramic viewpoints. The group arrives at the edge of the Merzouga desert around sunset, overnighting in a traditional adobe-style kasbah guesthouse at the foot of the dunes.
- Ifrane and the Middle Atlas cedar forest
- Ziz Valley palm oases
- Overnight: kasbah guesthouse, Merzouga (night 1 of 2 around Merzouga)
A Full Day Exploring the Sahara Around Merzouga
After breakfast, the day is spent exploring the dune field surrounding Merzouga, including the dunes of Erg Chebbi — among the tallest in the Moroccan Sahara. A visit is included to a nomadic family in the area, approached as a respectful visit rather than a staged stop.
There's time to walk through a green desert oasis before the group sets out by camel across the dunes toward a Berber camp for the night — a 4x4 transfer can typically be arranged instead if you'd prefer not to ride. The evening is spent around a campfire with traditional drumming, before sleeping beneath a clear desert sky in the middle of the dune field.
- Erg Chebbi dune exploration
- Nomad family visit
- Camel trek (or 4x4 alternative) to the Berber camp
- Overnight: Berber desert camp, Erg Chebbi (night 2 of 2 around Merzouga), dinner included
Merzouga to the Dades Valley via Rissani and Todra Gorges
An early start before sunrise gives time to watch daybreak from among the dunes, before breakfast and departure toward the Dades Valley.
The route passes through Rissani, a historic trading market for nomads and villages across the surrounding desert region, followed by a stop in Erfoud, known for its fossil trade, with the option to visit a fossilized marble workshop.
The road then reaches the Todra Gorges, where the Todra River has carved a canyon of towering vertical rock walls popular with rock climbers. Lunch is taken on site, with a half-hour walk into the gorge to take in its scale at a relaxed pace. The afternoon continues into the Dades Valley, with dinner and overnight stay among the Dades Gorges — a broader landscape than Todra's narrow canyon, with kasbah-dotted views along the road.
- Rissani market and Erfoud fossil workshops
- Todra Gorges walk
- Overnight: hotel, Dades Valley, dinner included
Dades Valley to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou
After breakfast, the drive leaves the Dades Valley for the Valley of Roses, following the route of a thousand kasbahs through the palm oasis of Skoura. A stop is made in Ouarzazate, sometimes called the Hollywood of Africa for its film studios, where a visit to a working studio lot is possible.
The route continues to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco's most recognizable fortified villages — historically a stop on the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, and more recently a filming location for productions including Gladiator. From there, the road climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass through the High Atlas, passing a string of Berber villages before descending into Marrakech. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel.
Called "a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco" by UNESCO World Heritage
- Valley of Roses and Skoura palm oasis
- Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO)
- Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas
- Overnight: hotel, Marrakech, dinner included
Full-Day Guided Tour of Marrakech
After breakfast, a local guide leads a full day through Marrakech, the Red City. The tour covers the city's best-known landmarks, including the exterior of the Koutoubia Mosque, the Saadian Tombs, the Majorelle Gardens (entrance fee not included), and the ornate Bahia Palace.
Lunch is taken near Jemaa el-Fna square, followed by a stroll through the surrounding souks. The remainder of the afternoon and evening is left free to explore independently, with dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
- Koutoubia exterior, Saadian Tombs, Majorelle Gardens, Bahia Palace
- Jemaa el-Fna and the souks
- Overnight: hotel, Marrakech, dinner included
Transfer to Marrakech Airport
A driver collects you from the hotel and transfers you to Marrakech Airport, bringing the 8-day journey from Fes to Marrakech to a close.
- Private transfer to Marrakech Airport
- Trip ends: Marrakech
Two Imperial Cities, Two Guided Experiences
Most Fes-to-Marrakech desert crossings treat both cities as bookends — a night before and after the real focus, the Sahara. This route gives each city a genuine, guided full day: Fes's medieval medina, craftsmanship and scholarly heritage on Day 2, and Marrakech's palaces, gardens and souks on Day 7. The Sahara still gets two nights of its own in between.
Why Two Nights Around Merzouga?
The first night (kasbah guesthouse at the edge of the dunes) and the second night (Berber camp inside Erg Chebbi) serve different purposes. Arriving the evening before means no rush to reach the desert — the next day is free for a full Sahara exploration, the nomad family visit and the oasis walk, before the camel trek into the dunes for the camp night. A single-night version of this route skips straight to the camel trek on arrival, with no full day in between.
What Makes This Journey Premium?
The included desert camp is a traditional Berber camp, not a verified luxury property — if a higher category matters to you, ask about upgrades when requesting your quote. What's genuinely premium here is structural, not just the label.
A private vehicle and driver for the full 8 days, local guides specifically where they add value (Fes and Marrakech), and a route that can run in either direction depending on your flights.
- Private transportation, your party only
- Dedicated driver throughout
- Guided full days in both Fes and Marrakech
- Two nights around Merzouga, not a rushed overnight
- Door-to-door airport pickup and drop-off
- Tailor-made — reversible route and adjustable stops
Private vs. Group Fes-to-Marrakech Desert Tour
| This Private Tour | Typical Group Tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Your party only | Shared with other travelers |
| Pace | Adjustable for your group | Fixed to the group's schedule |
| City guides | Dedicated to your group | Shared with other travelers |
| Cost | Generally higher per person | Generally lower, shared costs |
Shorter Crossing or the Full 8-Day Route?
A 4-day Fes to Marrakech tour covers the same general direction as an efficient Sahara crossing, with limited time in either city. This 8-day version adds a full guided day in Fes, a second Merzouga night, and a full guided day in Marrakech — the difference is depth, not just extra driving.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the 4-day Fes to Marrakech tour?
The 8-day tour adds a full guided day in Fes and a full guided day in Marrakech at either end, plus a second night around the Merzouga desert, so both cities and the Sahara get proper time rather than being a stop on the way through.
Is the Fes city tour on foot or by vehicle?
The Fes medina tour is done almost entirely on foot with a local guide, since the old city's alleyways are largely car-free — comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
How many nights are spent in Merzouga?
Two nights around Merzouga — the first at a kasbah guesthouse at the foot of the dunes, the second in a Berber camp reached by camel trek deep in the Erg Chebbi dunes.
How many nights are spent in the desert camp itself?
One night, in the Berber camp within the dunes. The first of the two Merzouga nights is a kasbah guesthouse at the edge of the desert, not the camp itself.
Is this a private tour or a group tour?
It runs as a private, tailor-made tour with your own driver and vehicle throughout, so the pace and stops can be adjusted for your group.
Is camel riding mandatory in the Sahara?
The camel trek is part of the standard itinerary, but a 4x4 transfer to the desert camp can typically be arranged instead if you'd prefer not to ride — confirm this when requesting your quote.
Is the desert camp a luxury camp?
The included camp is a traditional Berber desert camp rather than a verified luxury property. If a higher category camp is important to you, ask about upgrade options when requesting your quote.
Are entrance fees included?
No. Entrance fees to monuments, museums and Majorelle Gardens are not included.
What meals are included?
Daily breakfast is included throughout, plus dinner on Days 4, 5 and 6. Lunches are not included, so you can choose where to eat.
Does the tour visit Ait Ben Haddou?
Yes, on Day 6, en route from the Dades Valley to Marrakech. It's a UNESCO World Heritage ksar and a historic stop on the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, in addition to its more recent film appearances.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the most comfortable temperatures across Fes, the mountains and the desert. Summer is hot in Merzouga; winter nights in the desert camp can be cold.
Can the tour be reversed to start in Marrakech and end in Fes?
Yes, the itinerary can run in either direction — just let us know your preferred starting city when booking.
What should I pack for the desert camp night?
A warm layer for the evening and early morning, comfortable closed shoes for the dunes, sunglasses, and a scarf or hat for sun and sand.
How much does an 8-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour cost?
Cost depends on group size, travel dates and accommodation preference, so we provide a personalized quotation rather than a fixed listed price.
