All Four Imperial Cities, Chefchaouen & the Sahara
This 9-day private tour from Casablanca combines all four of Morocco's imperial cities — Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech — with Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the Middle Atlas, one night in the Sahara at Merzouga, and the southern kasbah route through Todra, Dades, Skoura and Ait Ben Haddou. It's a broader product than a "desert tour" label suggests.
A private, air-conditioned vehicle and driver run throughout, with local guides joining for the full-day tours in Fes and Marrakech. The tour finishes with a transfer to either Marrakech Airport or back to Casablanca — confirm which suits your flights when requesting your quote.
Morocco's Four Imperial Cities in One Journey
Rabat
Morocco's political capital and a historic imperial city.
Meknes
Built under Sultan Moulay Ismail, with the Bab Mansour gate and Royal Stables.
Fes
Morocco's spiritual and cultural capital, with a full guided day.
Marrakech
The southern imperial capital, with a guided day near the end of the trip.
Casablanca, Chefchaouen and Volubilis are also part of this route, but none are imperial cities: Casablanca is Morocco's modern Atlantic metropolis, Chefchaouen is a Rif Mountain town, and Volubilis is a Roman archaeological site.

How Does the 9-Day Itinerary Unfold?
Every night's accommodation is confirmed in advance — this is a guide to how the days unfold, not a loose outline.
Arrival in Casablanca
You're welcomed at Casablanca Airport and transferred to your hotel. The evening is free to explore Casablanca at your own pace or simply rest after your journey.
- Airport pickup and transfer
- Free evening in Casablanca
- Overnight: hotel, Casablanca
Casablanca — Rabat — Chefchaouen
A stop at the Hassan II Mosque, built out over the Atlantic with a 210-metre minaret that was among the tallest in the world for many years, precedes the drive to Rabat. There, the Kasbah of the Oudayas overlooks the Bou Regreg river, alongside the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of a 12th-century mosque project. The route continues north into the Rif Mountains, arriving in Chefchaouen — the blue city — by evening, with time for a stroll through its blue-washed lanes.
- Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca
- Kasbah of the Oudayas, Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Hassan Tower, Rabat
- Overnight: hotel, Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen — Volubilis — Meknes — Fes
The route heads south toward Fes, stopping first at Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Roman site with well-preserved mosaics, arches and basilicas. Meknes follows — one of Morocco's four imperial cities — with the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the monumental Bab Mansour gate, and the 17th-century Royal Stables. By late afternoon, the day ends in Fes, with the evening free.
Volubilis is inscribed as "an exceptionally well preserved example of a large Roman colonial town" — UNESCO World Heritage

- Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, Bab Mansour gate, Royal Stables, Meknes

Full-Day Guided Tour of Fes
A local guide leads a full day through Fes el-Bali, one of the best-preserved medieval medinas in the Arab world: the outer gates of the Royal Palace, the Mellah (the historic Jewish quarter), the 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa, the exterior of the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university — often cited as the world's oldest continuously operating educational institution, though entry is reserved for worshippers and students — and the Chouara Tannery. The afternoon is free to explore further or rest at your hotel.

Fes — Ifrane — Azrou — Ziz Valley — Merzouga
One of the longer driving days on the route. Ifrane, often called the "Switzerland of Morocco" for its alpine-style architecture, precedes the Azrou cedar forest, where Barbary macaques may sometimes be seen near the road. The landscape then opens into the Ziz Valley's palm groves before reaching Merzouga by afternoon. A camel trek carries you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset — a 4x4 transfer can replace this if you'd prefer not to ride — followed by a Berber dinner and music around the campfire at your luxury desert camp.
- Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest
- Ziz Valley palm groves
- Camel trek (or 4x4 alternative) into Erg Chebbi
- Overnight: luxury desert camp, Merzouga, dinner included
Merzouga — Rissani — Todra Gorges — Dades Valley
An early wake-up for sunrise over the dunes, then a return to Merzouga by camel before breakfast. Rissani, an ancient desert trading post, brings a lively souk and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif. Continuing to the Todra Gorges, canyon walls rise sharply above the valley floor — a walk along the riverbed is well worth the stop. The day ends in the Dades Valley, known for its striking rock formations.
- Dune sunrise and Rissani's souk
- Todra Gorges riverside walk
- Overnight: hotel, Dades Valley
Dades Valley — Skoura — Ouarzazate — Ait Ben Haddou — Marrakech
The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs passes through Kalaat M'Gouna, known for its rose distilleries, before Skoura and the Amridil Kasbah, one of Morocco's best-preserved. Ouarzazate — sometimes called the "Hollywood of Africa" for its film studios — brings the Taourirt Kasbah, before the day's centerpiece: Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar that has appeared in films including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. The road then climbs the Tizi n'Tichka Pass over the High Atlas, descending into Marrakech by evening.
Ait Ben Haddou is called "a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco" by UNESCO World Heritage
- Skoura's Amridil Kasbah and Ouarzazate's Taourirt Kasbah

Full-Day Guided Tour of Marrakech
A local guide leads a day through the exterior of the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, and the Saadian Tombs, followed by the Majorelle Garden. In the afternoon, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna Square come alive with street performers and market stalls, with the rest of the day free to explore at your own pace.
- Koutoubia exterior, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, Majorelle Garden
- Souks and Jemaa el-Fna
- Overnight: riad, Marrakech
Departure
After breakfast, your driver transfers you to either Marrakech Airport or back to Casablanca, according to your departure flight, bringing this 9-day journey to a close.
Both finish points are available — confirm which suits your flights when you request your quote. A Marrakech-to-Casablanca transfer takes around 2.5-3 hours if that's your chosen route.
- Private transfer to Marrakech Airport or Casablanca
- Trip ends: Marrakech or Casablanca
Is 9 Days Enough — and How Much Driving Is Involved?
Nine days is enough for a comprehensive circuit covering all four imperial cities, Chefchaouen, Volubilis and one Sahara night, with dedicated guided days in both Fes and Marrakech. It's an active itinerary rather than a slow one — Day 5 (Fes to Merzouga) and Day 7 (Dades to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou) are the two longest driving days. If you'd like more breathing room in the same destinations, our 10 and 14-day Casablanca itineraries slow the pace further.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 9 days enough for Morocco?
Yes, for a comprehensive first trip. Nine days is enough to cover all four imperial cities, Chefchaouen, Roman Volubilis and one Sahara night, with dedicated guided days in both Fes and Marrakech, without every day being a transfer.
What are Morocco's four Imperial Cities?
Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech. This 9-day tour visits all four — Casablanca, Chefchaouen and Volubilis are also included but are not, themselves, imperial cities.
Does this tour finish in Marrakech or Casablanca?
Both options are available. Day 9 transfers you to either Marrakech Airport or back to Casablanca, depending on your departure flight — confirm your preference when requesting your quote.
Is this a private tour?
Yes. You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver for the full 9 days, with local guides joining for the Fes and Marrakech city days.
Does the tour visit Chefchaouen?
Yes, on Day 2, with an evening to explore the blue medina before continuing south the next day.
Is Chefchaouen one of Morocco's Imperial Cities?
No. Chefchaouen is a Rif Mountain town, included in this itinerary for its distinct character, not for imperial-city status.
Does the tour visit Volubilis?
Yes, on Day 3, en route from Chefchaouen to Fes. Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage Roman archaeological site.
How many nights are spent in the Sahara?
One night, at a luxury desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga.
Is camel riding mandatory in the Sahara?
The camel trek into Erg Chebbi is part of the standard itinerary, but a 4x4 transfer to the desert camp can be arranged instead if you'd prefer not to ride.
What is the difference between Merzouga and Erg Chebbi?
Merzouga is the desert-edge settlement and gateway where the tour arrives; Erg Chebbi is the specific dune field beside it where the camel trek and desert camp take place.

Yes, both on Day 6 — Todra Gorge for its towering canyon walls and a riverside walk, and Dades Valley for its rock formations, on the way to Ouarzazate the following day.

How much does a 9-day private Morocco tour from Casablanca cost?
