8-Day Morocco Tour from Tangier to Marrakech: Imperial Cities & Sahara

Your driver meets you at the Tangier port or airport and sets off toward the Rif Mountains. The route passes through Tetouan before reaching Chefchaouen by afternoon — a village nestled at the foot of the Rif, known for its blue-painted medina. There's time to explore the narrow streets, visit the Spanish-style Plaza Uta el-Hammam, and browse the arts and crafts shops before settling in for the night.

The road heads toward Volubilis, a UNESCO-listed Roman archaeological site with well-preserved mosaics and standing archways. Continuing to Meknes, one of Morocco's imperial cities, there's a stop for lunch and a walk through the historic medina, taking in the Bab Mansour gate and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. After a stop for lunch, the afternoon covers the Attarine Madrasa and a visit to a local tile cooperative to see traditional Moroccan ceramic-making, finishing with a panoramic view over the medina.

One of the longer driving days on the route. Ifrane, sometimes called "Little Switzerland" for its alpine-style architecture and pine forests, comes first, followed by a lunch stop in Midelt. After a further stop in Errachidia, the route reaches Merzouga, where a camel trek carries you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset — a 4x4 transfer can be arranged instead if you'd prefer not to ride — before arriving at your desert camp for a traditional Moroccan dinner.

An early rise for sunrise over the dunes, then a camel ride back to camp for breakfast. The drive continues to the Todra Gorges, where towering rock walls frame a narrow canyon; after lunch, there's time to walk into the gorge on foot. The day continues into the Dades Valley for the night.
