Overview

Why This 6-Day Route Isn't Just a Longer Desert Tour

Most Marrakech-to-Merzouga desert tours drive out and back along the same road. This one doesn't. The outbound route runs via Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura, and the Dades and Todra valleys, reaching Merzouga on Day 3 for two nights in the Erg Chebbi dunes. The return leg then heads further south through the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the Draa Valley via Agdez, before rejoining the road at Ouarzazate — a genuine loop through a second region, not a retrace of the outbound drive.

That extra loop is what six days actually buys you over a shorter tour: not just more time in Merzouga, but an entirely different stretch of southern Morocco on the way home. The tour runs privately throughout, with your own vehicle and English-speaking driver for the full six days.

Comparing Lengths

Is 6 Days Better Than 3, 4 or 5?

DurationWhat It Prioritizes
3 DaysThe fastest practical Sahara loop — longer driving days, core highlights only
4-5 DaysA more comfortable pace with the same broad route
6 DaysTwo nights in Merzouga plus a full extra region — the Anti-Atlas and Draa Valley — on the return

If your priority is simply reaching the dunes in the shortest reasonable time, our 3-day desert tour (ending in Fes rather than back in Marrakech) covers that. This 6-day version is for travelers who want the extra southern loop, not just more Merzouga time.

Day By Day

How Does the 6-Day Itinerary Unfold?

Every night's accommodation is confirmed in advance — this is a guide to how the days unfold, not a loose outline.

Day 01

Marrakech — High Atlas — Ait Ben Haddou — Ouarzazate

Pickup from your riad in Marrakech starts the drive toward the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres the highest road pass in Morocco, with panoramic views over the High Atlas and Berber villages along the way. A stop in Telouet, once connected to the powerful Glaoui family, includes a look at the local salt mines. Ait Ben Haddou follows — a UNESCO World Heritage ksar and a genuine example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture, whose film credits include Gladiator, Game of Thrones and The Mummy. In Ouarzazate, the Atlas Film Studios and Kasbah Taourirt, another former Glaoui residence, round out the day.

Ait Ben Haddou is described as "a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco" by UNESCO World Heritage

Summary
  • Tizi n'Tichka pass and Telouet's salt mines
  • Guided visit to Ait Ben Haddou
  • Atlas Film Studios and Kasbah Taourirt, Ouarzazate
  • Overnight: Ouarzazate
Day 02

Ouarzazate — Skoura — Rose Valley — Dades Gorges

The Skoura Palmeraie and the Rose Valley — known for its annual rose festival each May — precede a stop for tea with panoramic views before continuing along an off-road route into the Dades Valley, sometimes called the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs for its unusual rock formations.

Summary
  • Skoura Palmeraie and the Rose Valley
  • Rock formations of the Dades Valley
  • Overnight: Dades Gorges
Day 03

Dades Gorges — Todra Gorges — Merzouga

A short hike along the narrow, towering cliffs of the Todra Gorges, reached via Tinghir, precedes the drive through the stony desert and the fossil-rich palmeries of Erfoud to Rissani, known for its souks. By afternoon, Merzouga is reached, and a camel trek of about 40 minutes carries you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset, followed by a traditional Berber dinner, a drum performance, and a night in a desert camp.

Summary
  • Todra Gorges on foot
  • Erfoud's fossil workshops and Rissani's souks
  • Camel trek into Erg Chebbi at sunset
  • Overnight: desert camp, Merzouga, dinner included
Day 04

Exploring the Merzouga Desert Region

A day dedicated to the wider desert region: the Fossil Center in Merzouga, then Rissani — birthplace of the Alawite dynasty and home to the largest market in southern Morocco — followed by Khamlia village for a performance of Gnawa music, a tradition with roots in sub-Saharan culture. The afternoon is free back at your accommodation in Merzouga.

Summary
  • Fossil Center and Rissani's market
  • Khamlia village and Gnawa music
  • Free afternoon
  • Overnight: Merzouga
Day 05

Merzouga — Anti-Atlas Mountains — N'Kob — Agdez

Departing Merzouga around 9am, the route turns south through the Anti-Atlas Mountains toward Agdez — a different, rockier landscape from the drive out. Alnif, known for its henna groves, and N'Kob, a green oasis surrounded by palm groves, break up the drive before reaching Agdez, a small town on the Draa River, Morocco's longest.

This is one of the longer driving days on the route — expect a full day mostly spent on the road, broken up by the Alnif and N'Kob stops.

Summary
  • Anti-Atlas Mountains
  • Alnif's henna groves and N'Kob's palm oasis
  • Overnight: Agdez, on the Draa River
Day 06

Agdez — Ouarzazate — Telouet — Marrakech

The return journey crosses the Tizi n'Tinififft pass, at 1,660 metres the highest in the Anti-Atlas, with a brief stop in Ouarzazate before continuing through the High Atlas and a second stop in Telouet. Arrival back in Marrakech, with drop-off at your riad, hotel or the airport, is timed for around 5pm.

Summary
  • Tizi n'Tinififft pass over the Anti-Atlas
  • Brief stop in Ouarzazate and Telouet
  • Drop-off in Marrakech (riad, hotel or airport), around 5pm
Why This Tour

Why Choose a 6-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Tour?

A shorter tour has to choose between Merzouga time and route variety. This one doesn't — two nights in the Merzouga area come alongside a genuine loop through the Anti-Atlas and Draa Valley on the way home, rather than retracing the outbound road.

That extra structure matters most for travelers who'd rather see somewhere new on the return leg than repeat the same landscape twice.

  • Two nights in the Merzouga area, not a single rushed overnight
  • A different return route via the Anti-Atlas and Draa Valley
  • A full day dedicated to exploring the wider desert region
  • Private vehicle and driver for the full six days
  • Customizable accommodation category and pace
Choosing Your Desert

Merzouga vs Agafay: Which Desert Experience Fits?

Merzouga sits beside the Erg Chebbi dunes, a genuine Saharan sand-dune field reached after a multi-day journey from Marrakech, as this itinerary is built around. Agafay is a rocky desert landscape less than an hour from Marrakech — closer and easier to fit into a short stay, but a different kind of scenery without Erg Chebbi's tall dunes. If the sand dunes themselves are the priority, Merzouga is worth the drive; if you want a desert evening without committing several days, see our Agafay Desert Experience instead.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6 days enough for a Marrakech desert tour?

Yes — six days is enough to reach Merzouga without rushing and still continue south through the Anti-Atlas Mountains and Draa Valley on the way back, a loop that shorter tours don't have time for.

Is 6 days better than 4 or 5 days?

It depends what you want. A 4 or 5-day tour covers the Sahara highlights faster; this 6-day version adds a full extra region — the Anti-Atlas and Draa Valley via Agdez — on the return leg, rather than retracing the outbound route.

How far is Marrakech from Merzouga?

It's roughly 560 km by road, but this itinerary doesn't drive it in one go — the outbound journey is spread across three days via Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura, Dades and Todra.

Does this tour return the same way it arrived?

No. The outbound route runs via Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades and Todra valleys; the return leg goes south through the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the Draa Valley via Agdez before rejoining the road at Ouarzazate — a genuine loop, not a there-and-back drive.

How many nights are spent in the Merzouga area?

Two nights — one at a desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes, and a second at accommodation in Merzouga town after a day exploring the wider desert region.

Is camel riding mandatory in the Sahara?

A camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes is part of the standard itinerary. If you'd prefer not to ride, ask about a 4x4 alternative when requesting your quote.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. You travel with your own vehicle and driver for the full 6 days — not a shared group tour.

Does the tour visit Ait Ben Haddou?

Yes, on Day 1, including the Tizi n'Tichka pass and a stop in Telouet.

Does it include Dades and Todra Gorges?

Yes. Dades Gorges are visited on Day 2, and Todra Gorges (via Tinghir) on Day 3, on the way to Merzouga.

What is the difference between Merzouga and Agafay?

Merzouga sits beside the Erg Chebbi dunes, a genuine Saharan dune field roughly 9 hours from Marrakech by direct road. Agafay is a rocky desert landscape less than an hour from Marrakech — closer, but a different kind of scenery, without the tall sand dunes.

What is included in this 6-day tour?

A private vehicle and driver, 5 nights' accommodation in riads and a desert camp, half-board meals, entrance fees for the sites specifically listed, the camel trek, and sandboarding. Full details are listed in the inclusions section above.

How much does a 6-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour cost?

Cost depends on group size, travel dates and accommodation preference, so we provide a personalized quotation rather than a fixed listed price.

Can this itinerary be customized?

Yes. Accommodation category, pace and specific stops can be adjusted before your trip is confirmed.

Is this tour suitable for families?

Yes, though it involves several long driving days, particularly Day 5 through the Anti-Atlas — worth discussing in advance if traveling with young children.

Are entrance fees included?

Entrance fees are included for the sites specifically listed in this itinerary's confirmed inclusions.
