Why Tangier is a great starting point for Morocco

Tangier sits at the meeting point of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain — a location that's made it a crossroads city for centuries and, today, a genuinely convenient gateway for travellers arriving by ferry from Europe as much as by air. Starting a tour here rather than in Marrakech or Casablanca means your first day is already in motion: the Kasbah, the old medina, and the viewpoint at Cape Spartel are all close enough to fold into an arrival afternoon before the real journey south begins.

The northern route that every itinerary shares

Every tour on this page follows a similar shape at the start: south from Tangier into the Rif Mountains, then into Chefchaouen, the blue-washed hillside town that's become one of the most photographed places in the country. From there, the road turns toward the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial cities of Meknes and Fes, before the real transition begins — the Middle Atlas, the Ziz Valley, and the golden dunes of Merzouga on the edge of the Sahara. The longer the tour, the more room there is to add Rabat, Asilah or a full Morocco Grand Tour circuit rather than heading straight for the desert.

Choosing the right length from Tangier

A 7-day tour is enough to reach the Sahara and back without feeling rushed, provided the days are planned tightly around the north-to-south drive. Give it 8 to 11 days and there's real room to slow down — a fuller day in Chefchaouen, a stop in Rissani's market, or the coastal detour through Asilah and Rabat that the longer itineraries include.
