5 Days Northern Morocco Photo Journey

The journey begins in Tangier, the coastal city where Africa meets Europe. The drive inland climbs through the Rif Mountains, with scenic viewpoints over terraced hillsides and rural villages along the way. By midday, Chefchaouen appears — the Blue City's narrow alleys, painted doors and stairways offering compositions at every turn. As the sun sets, the Spanish Mosque viewpoint gives a wide panorama of the town glowing in the evening light.

A full day at your own pace in a genuine photographer's town. Early mornings bring quiet streets and soft light on the blue-washed walls, hanging plants and decorative arches. The central square, the Ras El Ma waterfall and quieter side alleys all offer material through the day — portraits, street scenes, crafts and colour — before finishing with Chefchaouen's rooftops and surrounding mountains at golden hour.

The road south leads to the UNESCO site of Volubilis, among the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa — ancient columns, mosaics and arches set among olive fields make for strong architectural and landscape shots. Meknes follows, once an imperial capital, with the Bab Mansour gate, historic granaries and lively medina streets worth the stop. By late afternoon, Fes comes into view, with blue-hour shots of the old city before settling into a riad for the evening.

A full day in one of the oldest medieval cities in the world. With a local guide, the labyrinthine streets of the medina open up — artisan workshops, traditional markets and historic architecture throughout. The Chouara Tannery is a highlight, with rooftop views over the dye pits and workers at their trade, alongside mosques, madrasas, fountains and souks full of colour and character.

The final stretch heads toward the Atlantic coast, with a stop in Rabat to photograph the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the blue-and-white Kasbah of the Udayas overlooking the ocean — clean, balanced compositions that mix history with modern architecture. From there, the route continues toward Casablanca or Tangier, depending on your departure, with a memory card full of northern Morocco's mountains, medinas and coastline.
