Overview

A Private Journey, Not a Stationary Retreat

This is a 5-day private journey from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga, one of the Sahara's more remote dune fields — not a residential retreat where you stay in one place. You travel across the High Atlas Mountains, stop at the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, follow the Draa Valley's palm groves, and continue by 4x4 across open desert tracks to reach the dunes, since there's no paved road for the final stretch. Daily yoga sessions are built into the route — gentle stretching after driving days, and dedicated sunrise, sunset and restorative practice once you're in the desert.

A private vehicle and driver run throughout the full 5 days. Mats are provided for every session; a certified instructor can be arranged on request rather than being automatically included, so mention this when you request your quote.

Why This Journey Is Different

Move, Breathe, Explore, Rest

Erg Chigaga, Not Merzouga

A more remote dune field, reached only by 4x4 — fewer camps, more isolation.

A Journey, Not a Retreat

Five days moving through real landscapes, not five days in one location.

Yoga Built Into the Route

Sessions timed to the day — stretching after drives, sunrise and sunset in the dunes.

Fully Private

Your own vehicle and driver throughout, not a scheduled group departure.

Day By Day

How Does the 5-Day Journey Unfold?

Every night's accommodation is confirmed in advance — this is a guide to how the days unfold, not a loose outline.

Day 01

Marrakech — High Atlas — Ait Ben Haddou — Draa Valley

Your private driver collects you from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. The road crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops for photos and short walks. Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar, follows, with time to walk through the old fortress village and have lunch. The afternoon continues through Ouarzazate toward the Draa Valley's palm groves (the Agdz or Zagora area).

After checking into a guesthouse or boutique hotel with a pool, a gentle evening yoga session stretches out the day's driving, followed by dinner.

Ait Ben Haddou is called "a striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco" by UNESCO World Heritage

Summary
  • Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas
  • Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO World Heritage)
  • Evening yoga session
  • Overnight: guesthouse/boutique hotel, Draa Valley, dinner included
Day 02

Draa Valley — M'Hamid — Erg Chigaga (Sunset Yoga)

A short morning yoga practice follows breakfast, before the drive continues along the Draa Valley's palm groves and old kasbahs to M'Hamid, the last town before the open desert. From there, the paved road ends — a 4x4 continues across desert tracks and stony plateaus to the remote Erg Chigaga dunes, since there's no direct road to the camp.

On arrival, mint tea and time to settle in, followed by a guided sunset yoga session on the dunes and a period of quiet afterward. Dinner is served under the stars, with music around the campfire.

Summary
  • Draa Valley palm groves to M'Hamid
  • 4x4 crossing to Erg Chigaga (no paved road)
  • Sunset yoga on the dunes
  • Overnight: luxury desert camp, Erg Chigaga (night 1 of 2), dinner included
Day 03

Full Day in Erg Chigaga

An early sunrise yoga session overlooking the dunes, then breakfast. The day is intentionally unstructured: a short camel ride, a barefoot walk on the sand, or simply resting at the camp are all options, none required. In the afternoon, a nomad family visit or a 4x4 exploration of the surrounding dunes can be arranged. Before sunset, a second, more restorative session focuses on slower movement and breathing.

Summary
  • Sunrise yoga session
  • Optional: short camel ride, nomad family visit, 4x4 exploration
  • Evening restorative yoga session
  • Overnight: luxury desert camp, Erg Chigaga (night 2 of 2), dinner included
Day 04

Erg Chigaga — Foum Zguid — Taznakht — Ouarzazate

A gentle morning stretch on the dunes precedes departure by 4x4 back across the desert tracks, crossing the dry bed of Lake Iriki before reaching Foum Zguid, where the paved road resumes. Taznakht follows, known for its handwoven Berber carpets, with time for lunch and a short visit. The afternoon continues to Ouarzazate, known locally as the gateway between the desert and the Atlas.

After checking into a hotel or kasbah-style lodge, there's time to relax by the pool or arrange a hammam, followed by an evening yoga session before dinner.

Summary
  • 4x4 crossing back to Foum Zguid
  • Taznakht's Berber carpet weavers
  • Evening yoga session
  • Overnight: hotel or kasbah-style lodge, Ouarzazate, dinner included
Day 05

Ouarzazate — High Atlas — Marrakech

A short closing yoga or meditation session after breakfast, then the return drive to Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas again via the Tizi n'Tichka pass with stops for views and short walks. Arrival in Marrakech is by afternoon, with your driver dropping you at your riad, hotel or the airport depending on your onward plans.

Summary
  • Closing yoga or meditation session
  • Return crossing of the High Atlas
  • Trip ends: Marrakech
The Practice

The Yoga Experience

Sessions are built into the route rather than following a fixed studio schedule: a gentle evening stretch after Day 1's drive, sunrise and sunset practice in Erg Chigaga on Days 2-3, and a closing session on Day 5. Mats are provided throughout.

Mention your experience level and any preferences when requesting your quote — the sessions described (gentle evening stretching, restorative desert practice) suit a range of levels, but specifics depend on the instructor arrangement for your dates.

Is a Yoga Instructor Included?

Not automatically. Mats and a daily practice schedule are included, but a certified instructor is arranged on request rather than guaranteed by default — some groups bring their own teacher, others ask us to arrange one. Confirm this when requesting your quote so it's settled before you travel.

Who Is This Journey For?

Couples, solo travelers, friends and small private groups who want a slower way to see southern Morocco, with yoga woven into a real journey rather than a fixed studio schedule. It suits practitioners at a range of levels — the sessions described are gentle to moderate — but isn't a substitute for a residential wellness retreat if that's specifically what you're after.

Planning Your Trip

When Is the Best Time to Travel?

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the most comfortable temperatures for outdoor yoga, both crossing the High Atlas and in Erg Chigaga itself. Summer runs very hot in the desert during the day; winter nights in Erg Chigaga can be cold, which is worth planning for if you're practicing sunrise sessions.

Traveling Responsibly

Traveling Responsibly in Southern Morocco

The nomad family visit on Day 3 is offered as a respectful stop, not a staged attraction — approach it with the same courtesy you'd extend anywhere else. Water is limited in Erg Chigaga, so mindful use matters, and any waste should be carried back out with the group. See our Responsible & Sustainable Tourism in Morocco page for more detail.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a yoga retreat or a yoga journey?

It's a traveling journey, not a stationary residential retreat. You move through the High Atlas, the Draa Valley and Erg Chigaga rather than staying in one place, with yoga sessions built into each day along the route.

Where is Erg Chigaga?

Erg Chigaga is a remote Sahara dune field in southern Morocco, reached via M'Hamid and then by 4x4 across desert tracks — there's no paved road directly to the dunes.

What is the difference between Erg Chigaga and Merzouga?

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is Morocco's most accessible dune field, reached by paved road. Erg Chigaga is more remote, reached only by 4x4 across desert tracks from M'Hamid, with fewer camps and a stronger sense of isolation.

How do you get from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga?

By private vehicle over two days — crossing the High Atlas and the Draa Valley to M'Hamid, then continuing by 4x4 across open desert tracks to the dunes, since there's no paved road for the final stretch.

Is a yoga instructor included?

Mats and a daily practice schedule are included, but a certified instructor is not automatically included — one can be arranged on request, or your group can lead its own practice. Mention this when requesting your quote so it can be confirmed for your dates.

Is this journey suitable for yoga beginners?

The daily sessions are described as gentle to moderate, built around stretching after driving days and restorative practice in the desert, which suits a range of experience levels — mention your level when requesting your quote.

Is camel riding mandatory in Erg Chigaga?

No. The journey to and from the desert camp is by 4x4 either way — the camel ride offered on Day 3 is a separate, short, optional experience.

Is this a private journey?

Yes. You travel with your own private vehicle and driver for the full 5 days, not as part of a scheduled group departure.

How many nights are spent in Erg Chigaga?

Two nights, at a luxury desert camp in the dunes, with a full day in between to slow down and explore the surrounding desert.

What accommodation is included?

A guesthouse or boutique hotel with a pool in the Draa Valley, a luxury desert camp in Erg Chigaga for two nights, and a hotel or kasbah-style lodge in Ouarzazate. Exact properties depend on availability and your travel dates.

Are meals included?

Breakfast and dinner are included throughout. Lunches are not included, so you can choose where to eat along the way.

Can dietary requirements be accommodated?

Can the itinerary be customized?

Yes. Duration, accommodation category, and the yoga schedule can all be discussed and adjusted before your trip is confirmed.

How much does this journey cost?

Cost depends on group size, travel dates, accommodation category and whether a yoga instructor is arranged, so we provide a personalized quotation rather than a fixed listed price.
